The Mission of the Federated Community Church is to create a safe place to know and experience God’s love, to learn the stories and ways of Jesus, and to carry faith, hope, and love into the world.
Our Spiritual Team
Pastor Kwan Kim
His calling for ministry has never been shaken since he first witnessed the Holy Spirit at the age of 17. As time went by, his calling became even stronger and clearer, leading him to Methodist Theological University in Seoul, Korea, where he earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in Theology and received the “Thesis of the Year” award. He studied theology further at Duke Divinity School, Durham, NC, in which he received another advanced master’s degree.
His service has been diverse, ranging from small rural churches to large urban ones, single-ethnic congregations to multi-racial/multi-ethnic congregations. Yet, his unwavering commitment to ministry has remained constant. Wherever he has been appointed, his passion has always been in evangelism, church growth, and the next generation. He founded Zion Methodist Church in Korea, which grew from 0 to 80 in Sunday worship attendance, Agape Korean UMC in North Carolina from 100 to 250, and Korean Madisonville UMC in Ohio from about 200 to 300.
People from all walks of life accepted Jesus as their Savior and became members of the church. After long years of negative balances, the financial budget of churches turned positive. A congregation finished the long-awaited construction of an annex building. Another congregation relocated their sanctuary, purchasing a new building in a prime area with great excitement.
Since July 2023, Pastor Kwan has served Federated Community Church in Hampden. Sunday worship attendance increased nearly triple within a year, and the number of volunteers has grown more than double. His powerful musical talent, joyful spirit, and biblical preaching quench the spiritual thirst of the congregation and beyond. And now, Pastor Kwan and the congregation are eager to see how God is going to work marvelously through the church.
He is married to Su, with whom he has two sons, Tom and Teak. Their love and support have been a source of strength for Pastor Kwan, enabling him to serve the community with even greater dedication. Tom is pursuing an M.D. at Albany Medical College, NY, and Teak is studying Philosophy at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC. Pastor Kwan loves to be with his wife and enjoys making friends, singing with a guitar, and exploring new stuff.
Jocelyn Smith
Christian Education Coordinator
Jocelyn believes that it is a privilege to teach and pray for our children. “When we teach them God’s ways through Scripture, they bring God’s light and love to the future generations. As children learn about Christ and Biblical Principles, they will know a better way to navigate through life as they grow into adulthood. They will bring God’s love and light wherever they go.” As a result of the children knowing Jesus Christ, Jocelyn’s hope is that their joy and Godly wisdom be apparent in all they do and become.
In addition to her position as the Christian Education Coordinator, Jocelyn is also a Deacon, and she attends Bible Studies as well as Prayer Meetings. She was a sponsor for many confirmands throughout the years.
She attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst and received her Bachelor’s in Business. She then went on to continue her education at Western New England University in Springfield, MA and received her Master’s degrees in Business and in Information Systems. A few years after receiving her most recent degree from WNE, she decided to stay home and be with her family to raise her children and get more involved in the community.
When Jocelyn is not working at Federated Community Church, she loves spending time with her family. Their love and encouragement have been the foundation of her strength in pursuing her passion in learning more about God. She is married to Don, with whom she has three children: Jarrod, Gillian, and Andi. Her son, Jarrod, is a mechanical and electrical engineer in the outskirts of Boston, MA. Her daughter, Gillian, is a financial analyst in the center of Boston. Her younger daughter, Andi, is a payroll administrator at Western New England University in Springfield, MA. Jocelyn enjoys visiting with friends, playing tennis, bike rides, taking nature walks, watching movies and going to art museums with her husband
